rancid (adj) smelling or tasting unpleasant because of staleness.

Rancid food is food that tastes or smells unpleasant because it is no longer fresh. Rancid butter is butter gone stale and tastes unpleasant. The odor or taste of stale oil is rancid.

  • The butter in the fridge turned rancid because after cleaning the fridge and placing the stuff back in it, Ann forgot to switch on the fridge.
  • The cookies in the packet turned rancid. The child opening it had a vomiting sensation because of their unpleasant smell.
