rapport (noun) friendly understanding or relationship among people.

When you have a rapport with someone there is an excellent understanding between you and them. You have a friendly relationship with them and you get on very well with them because of the rapport. A successful teacher has a good rapport with their pupils, a good doctor has a good rapport with their patients, etc..

  • In spite of his thorough knowledge of medicine, he was not very successful as a doctor, because of his inability to build good relationship with his patients. He could not have a good practice because of this lack of rapport with his patients.
  • She was successful as a teacher of physically challenged children. This was due to the rapport she was able to build with them. She had a good understanding of their attitudes and abilities and made them feel that she was friendly with them.
