raze (verb) destroy completely.

When an earthquake razes buildings or a whole town, it destroys the buildings or the town completely. The buildings are leveled to the ground. When you raze a building you dismantle it, you pull it down, so that no trace of it is left.

  • The first atom bombs saw Hiroshima and Nagasaki razed to the ground. Only smoldering ruins were seen where once there had been flourishing cities. No trace of human beings or buildings was left.
  • The earthquake left the whole city in utter ruin. A whole block of buildings disappeared without trace as the earthquake razed it to the ground.
