reactionary (adj) strongly opposed to political or social change.

A person is reactionary if they oppose very strongly any social or political change. They are very conservative and to some extent anti progress. A reactionary attitude is the tendency to resist social or political change even when it is for good. Reactionary forces are groups of people opposed to change and progress.

  • No reform was possible as the government in power was totally reactionary. They always supported the old systems and old values even when they were harmful to the society.
  • The reactionary forces in the country did their best to oppose any measure that smelt of modernism. They stuck to old system, which they held as good for all times.
