reciprocate (verb) act, feel or give in the same way [two people or two groups].

Two people or two groups of people reciprocate if either of them behave the same way or feel the same way towards the other. You reciprocate if you do, feel or give the same way to your neighbor as your neighbor does, feels, gives to you. We reciprocate if we return in kind what others give us.

  • He wished me a happy new year and I reciprocated by wishing him a happy new year.
  • Pakistan attacked India and Indian forces across the border and the Indian forces reciprocated. They hit back and drove the Pak armies back.
