redundant (adj) more than is needed, required or desired.

Any thing found in excess of what is needed is redundant. A redundant worker is one who is found to be in excess of the number of workers needed. The redundant passages/details in a book are passages/details that are not needed or useful. A word is redundant if it is used with another word that has the same meaning.

  • The speeches of the speakers that spoke after the first speaker were redundant. They were mostly a repetition of what the first speaker had said, and contained little different or useful.
  • The style of the book is married by redundant expressions. The writer has used on a number of occasions words of the same meaning side by side.
