reek (verb) 1 give out a strong unpleasant smell. 2 suggest something unpleasant or suspicious in a situation.

A place reeks of tobacco and alcohol if it gives out the smell of tobacco and alcohol. A drunk reeks of alcohol, as we get that smell from them. ‘Even hours after the fire was put out, the place reeked of burnt wood and rubber.’ This means that the place continued to give out the smell of burnt wood and rubber even after the fire was put out.

  • The room was reeking with the smell of rotting flesh because of the dead cat lying there for two days.
