refute (verb) to prove something wrong or to say something is false.
You refute the charges against you if you prove them wrong. If you say that othersí complaints against you are false, you refute them. In a court of law, for example, the prosecution and the defense lawyer try to refute each otherís statements. That is, they try to prove each other wrong.
- The prime minister refuted the charges of the opposition that the government is acting against the interests of the people. By quoting facts and figures it was able to prove the opposition wrong.
- In the face of very strong proofs, he was unable to refute the charge that he had swindled a lot of public money. He could not prove that he was innocent.
