relegate (verb) revert to a lower position, rank, etc..

When a person is relegated, they are reverted to a lower position or rank. If a manager finds a worker inefficient, they may relegate them to a less important place in the organization. They may give them a less important, or lower position. A person is relegated to the background if their importance is reduced.

  • When the board found the executive director's performance responsible for the fall in the profits of the company, it relegated him to the rank of the manager of a small branch.
  • When he was relegated from the important position of a manager to the rank of section head, Charles left the company for another.
