relinquish (verb) give up something, especially, unwillingly.

When you relinquish your property, you stop having it, especially, unwillingly. You relinquish your post if you resign the post unwillingly. When you relinquish your control over something, you hand over control of it to someone without liking it.

  • The king relinquished the throne, under threat to his life from the army general. The general with the whole army under his control took over the charge of the government from the king.
  • He had to relinquish the office of the prime minister on knowing that in the elections his party had been defeated.
