rummage (verb) search thoroughly and untidily.

To rummage is to search for something, throwing things carelessly. When we search in a hurry for something among a number of other things, we throw them about carelessly. In the process we make them untidy too. To search like that is to rummage.

  • She rummaged her bag for the keys and in the process of her searching for them; she did not notice a currency note dropping out of her bag.
  • As he entered his room, he found his box open, and the things in it thrown around. He understood that in his absence someone, looking for something in his box, had rummaged it.
