sententious (adj) talking a lot about morals and principles.

Sententious remarks are moral statements. When you are sententious you try to appear important and intelligent by telling others how they should behave and what rules of conduct they should follow. Sententious people are not very much liked because they try to appear intelligent and important by making moral statements. They use a lot of proverbs, maxims, etc.

  • I could not listen to the speech for more than ten minutes because the speaker was very sententious. He wanted to appear very intelligent by filling his speech with moral statements.
  • This speech was different. It was not sententious unlike the other speeches. The other speeches were full of moral judgments and sounded like sermons, and the speakers tried to impress the listeners with their intelligence and importance.
