When a situation is in a shambles, it is in total confusion and disorder. If a country is in a shambles, it is in a state of confusion and disorder with no sign of any government. If a place is in a shambles, it is dirty and very untidy. It is in a mess.

  • The conference was in a shambles almost from the start. No one listened to the others, and the president failed to control the situation. Every one was shouting at every one else.
  • The whole house was in a shambles. It was dirty, and nothing was in its proper place. It would take at least two days to make it clean.
