shaving (noun) very thin piece of wood and other such material cut off from the surface.

Rough wood cannot be used for doors, windows, furniture, etc., without smoothening it. In the process, thin pieces of wood are cut off to make the surface even and smooth. These thin pieces of wood, or of any such material, cut off from a surface are called shavings.

  • The carpenter used his tool, the plane to smoothen and level the small log of wood. As he did so, shavings of wood fell in a heap on the floor. There were on the floor the thin pieces of wood shaved off from the wood.
  • The shavings of wood make very good fuel. The thin pieces of wood, usually dry, give out steady heat, when they burn.
