shirk (verb) avoid [duty, work, etc.].

When you shirk work, you avoid doing it, because you don't like it, or more because you are lazy. A person shirks their responsibility if they find ways and means to avoid the responsibility.

  • Jim was fired because he always shirked work. He was too lazy to do any work and always found some excuse or the other to avoid doing his duty. So he got the dismissal.
  • There was not a single occasion when he shirked work. He never avoided doing the work he had to do. He was never lazy.
