shunt (verb) change track of a railway train or carriage; move a person or a thing from their good position.
When railway carriages or a train is shunted, their track is changed. They are moved on to another track. A person is shunted if they are moved from their places to a less important or less favourable position, unjustly.
- The damaged carriage was shunted to the line on the left extreme of the yard. It was changed to that track for repairs.
- As the performance of the branch manager was not up to the mark, he was shunted to the planning section. It was an unimportant position of which he would be one among the many there.
