simulate (verb) pretend; create using computers, models, etc., conditions of a particular real life situation; made to resemble something else.

When you simulate illness you pretend to be ill. You appear to be ill, just to avoid something unpleasant for you. You simulate interest in something or in somebody when you appear to be interested in them but really are not. When a computer or model of a machine creates conditions of a situation in real life, it simulates that condition. When something seems to resemble something else, it simulates the thing it resembles.

  • He simulated a severe headache just to avoid going with them to the movie. He pretended headache because he did not like their company.
  • Simulators are used to simulate actual conditions of plane flight during the training of air pilots. These simulators give the pilots the experience of being on the plane and flying it.
