skirmish (noun) a minor fight; a short argument, especially between political parties or opposing sports teams.

A skirmish is a minor fight between two small groups of soldiers of opposite sides, away from the main battlefield. A fight between two small fleets of ships, especially away from the main scene of the battle is also a skirmish. A short argument between two political opponents or groups is a skirmish. A skirmish is also an argument between two players of opposing teams, or between the players and the umpire.

  • A skirmish was reported between a small group of German soldiers and those of the allied forces. In the short fight, there were casualties. Some ten soldiers were killed and quite a few were wounded.
  • The player felt that the referee's decision was unfair and had a skirmish with him. This argument he had with the referee led to the referee ordering the player out of the field.
