A skirmish is a minor fight between two small groups of soldiers of opposite sides, away from the main battlefield. A fight between two small fleets of ships, especially away from the main scene of the battle is also a skirmish. A short argument between two political opponents or groups is a skirmish. A skirmish is also an argument between two players of opposing teams, or between the players and the umpire.
