slag (noun) waste material [dross].

Slag is the waste material that resembles glass and remains with the ore after the metal has been obtained from the ore. It is also called dross. It sticks to the ore, the raw material from which any metal is obtained.

  • The scientist is researching if the slag can be useful in anyway. He goes by the theory that nothing is a waste in this world, so he is trying to find out if any useful can be obtained from the slag, which is a waste material.
  • Huge dumps of slag lay about the refinery. The waste material that remained after the metal was extracted from the ore was posing a problem to the mining company, as it did not know what to do with it.
