superfluous (adj) excessive; unnecessary.

Superfluous means more than what you need or want. Superfluous information is information that is unnecessary. When, for example, you have a raincoat, an umbrella is superfluous, that is the umbrella is unnecessary.

  • It will be superfluous to wrap up in waterproof sheets goods stored in a well-built warehouse. When the ware can protect from rain the goods stored in it, where is the need for wrapping them up in waterproof sheets?
  • Warm clothing in a warm climate is superfluous. When the climate is warm, there is no need to wear warm clothing.
