supplant (verb) replace; usurp.

To supplant is to take the place of a person or a thing so that they are no longer used or are no longer in power. When A supplants B, A takes the position of B with the result B loses his power. When a new method supplants an old method, it replaces that old method.

  • The computer has supplanted manual work in most areas, because a single computer can do the work of a number of people. As a result a number of people have become jobless.
  • The Mogul emperor Aurangzeb came to the throne, supplanting his father and his elder brothers. He removed his father from the throne by force and took his place.
