supposition (noun) assumption.
Supposition is something that you think is true though you are not sure of it and have no proof of it. When for example, you think that something you have lost has been stolen, though there is no proof for it, your supposition is that it has been stolen. The act of believing or claiming something though it cannot be proved is also supposition.
- The police are investigating his death on the supposition that he has been murdered. This thinking of theirs, so far not proved, is based on the evidence available.
- His entire argument is based on the supposition that he is not given proper respect. He believes that he is not getting proper respect though he has no proof for it.
