suppress (verb) end something by force; keep something from being known or from becoming public; control a feeling or an emotion; prevent something from going.

When a government suppresses a rebellion it puts an end to it by force. When somebody suppresses information, they prevent others from knowing the information. They do not allow others to know the information. When you suppress your anger/you control your anger, you do not express it.

  • The dictator suppressed the rebellion with all the brutal force he could command. He put it down mercilessly with all the force that he could use.
  • The police's point was that the man accused of murder suppressed important evidence that could prove his crime. They believed that he had hidden important information from them.
