surmise (verb) guess.

To surmise is to guess or to suppose on the basis of information you have, though you are not sure it is correct. From one's sad looks you guess that something bad has happened to them. That is, you surmised that something has gone wrong for them.

  • When she saw one of her children crying with its clothes torn, she surmised that there has been a fight between it and the other child. She guessed aright. The other child too was crying and had marks of injury on it.
  • I surmise that a world free from corruption is a distant dream. I guess so because corruption is so deep-rooted in the world.
