surmount (verb) overcome.

When you surmount a difficulty you overcome the difficulty or your difficulty ends because you have done something to end it. You surmount a difficulty when you are able to find a solution to your problem.

  • She knew very well about the difficult problems she had to surmount in her new position as the manager of the company. She had to overcome the difficulty of a lack of cooperation from her male subordinates who did not like a woman being their boss.
  • Helen Keller is an example of how people can surmount any difficulty if only they have the will, patience and confidence. Given these, anyone can certainly find a solution to any difficult problem.
