surrogate (adj) substitute.

A surrogate person or thing is a person or thing that takes place of, or used instead of somebody else/something else. A surrogate father, for example, is one who acts as the father of someone in the absence of the real father. A surrogate mother is a woman who takes the place of a mother in the absence of a natural mother.

  • Having lost her mother in her early childhood, the girl regarded her mother's sister as a surrogate mother. She treated her aunt as a mother in place of her natural mother.
  • The surrogate father, John cared so much for the boy that the boy hardly thought of his natural father who was no more. John acting in the place of his real father was considered the real father by the boy.
