sustain (verb) continue; provide enough; experience [something bad];

To sustain is to make something continue to happen for some time without becoming less. A movie, for example, sustains interest if it continues to be interesting throughout. If a movie cannot continue to be interesting, it cannot sustain interest. To sustain is also to support. Oxygen sustains life, in the sense that, without oxygen, there can be no life. A person sustains injuries if they experience injuries, that is, when they have injuries.

  • The movie was so badly directed that it failed to sustain the interest of the audience. It was interesting only in parts, but for the most part, it was boring.
  • Oxygen, which sustains life on earth, is absent on other planets. The other planets have no life on them because Oxygen, which supports life, does not exist there.
