tacit (adj) not said in so many words/understood.

A tacit agreement between two persons is an agreement not spoken about but understood by both. A tacit approval is silent approval, not expressed in words. So is tacit support, support given silently without being said.

  • There was a tacit approval from the authorities for the closure of the branch. The authorities did not say in so many words that the branch had to be closed, but that was the understanding.
  • They lent tacit support to the candidate of the opposite party, because they did not like their own party candidate. Though they did not say it in so many words, it was clear that they were doing everything to defeat their party candidate.
