talisman (noun) an object having magical powers.

A talisman is a charm, that is, an object believed to have magical powers to protect and to bring luck to the person possessing it. A person with a talisman believes that the thing has magical powers to protect them from danger and to bring them luck.

  • Charles says that all the successes he has had so far are due to the talisman he wears round his neck by means of a string. He strongly believes that the talisman he has hung round his neck has the magical power to bring him luck and protect him from evil spirits.
  • Only superstitious people believe in the powers of talismans. They are mere objects without any magical powers they are believed to have.
