tantalize (verb) offer someone something they really want and deny it.

When you tantalize someone you offer them what they very much want but refuse to give it. In this way you deny them what they very much like to have and cause trouble to them.

  • Philip offered his friend Eddy, an alcoholic, with a bottle of drink, just to make him do what he wanted. Once that was done he did not give him the bottle either. That was how he Philip tantalized him.
  • The offer of the plum job really tantalized Alfred. He appeared to be getting it, but did not get it in the end, because the man who promised him the job did not give it.
