taut (adj) [of a piece of string] tightly stretched ; [of a person] experiencing tension.

When a rope or string is taut it is tightly stretched and is not coiled. A rope so stretched that it is very tight is taut. The taut strings of a violin or guitar are the strings that are tightly stretched. To be taut is also to experience tension.

  • As the strings of guitar were not taut, the guitarist could not play it. Unless they are tightly stretched, they do not produce proper musical sounds.
  • A few minutes to the interview, the candidate was very taut. He was worried and experienced a lot of tension.
