tentative (adj) [of an arrangement, agreement, etc.] not definite or certain; not confident.

A tentative arrangement/agreement is not a definite arrangement and is likely to be changed later. It is more or less an arrangement for the time being and is to be confirmed later. When a person is not confident about doing something and is hesitant, they are tentative. A tentative attempt is not an attempt made with confidence.

  • The timetable for the matches is tentative. The schedule is not final and there are likely to be some changes.
  • The batsman's attempt to drive the ball was tentative. He made the attempt without much confidence and was not sure of the shot. In the process, he hit the ball straight into the hands of the mid-off fielder.
