A terse message is given in very few words and often not seems to be friendly or polite. Anything in very few words and often lacking friendly or politeness is terse. A terse reply is a very brief and curt reply showing that the speaker is not polite. A terse style is a way of writing or speech in which very few words convey a lot of meaning or ideas.

  • All that he received in reply to his lengthy letter was the terse reply asking him to wait. The reply was brief and appeared to be unfriendly and a bit impolite.
  • The book written in a very terse style attracted a good number of readers. The style had the quality of conveying in very few words a lot of meaning.
