threadbare (adj) [of clothes, fabric, etc.] very thin and worn-out because of long use; [of arguments, excuse, etc.] having little effect because they have been used too often.
Clothes, fabrics, carpets are threadbare if they are very thin and worn-out because of long use. A threadbare coat is a worn-out coat because of long use. A threadbare argument is not interesting because it has been used too often.
- His excuse that he happened to come late because of a traffic jam is threadbare. He has used this too often and no one believes him when he says it.
