thwart (verb) prevent somebody from doing what they want to do.
When somebody thwarts your attempts, for example, to start a business; they prevent you from doing it. They try to see that you don't start the business. Bad weather may thwart your attempts to climb a mountain. That is, bad weather may stop your climbing the mountain.
- Porus thwarted Alexander's attempts to conquer South Asia. By his stiff resistance to the invasion of Alexander, Porus was able to stop Alexander from occupying Southern Asia.
- The watchfulness of the police thwarted his attempt to smuggle drugs across the border. The police caught him in the act of smuggling and took him into custody.
