tiller (noun) handle used to turn the rudder of a boat.

The tiller is the handle with which we turn the rudder of a ship to change its direction. The tiller decides the direction in which the ship moves.

  • Afraid that the boat might sink at any time, the sailor held the tiller all the time, to see that the rudder was under his control. The handle of the rudder helped him to keep the rudder steady.
  • With the tiller broken, the sailor did not know how to control the movements of the boat. The tiller gone, there was no handle for him to fix the direction of the boat.
