tortuous (adj) (of a road) full of curves; lengthy and not direct and therefore complicated and difficult to understand.

A road is tortuous if it is full of curves and bends and is therefore difficult to travel along. The course of a river is tortuous if it flows in a zigzag manner. Anything that is not simple and direct, and is therefore complicated and difficult to understand is tortuous.

  • The road up the hill was tortuous. The road being full of curves and hairpin bends, we found it difficult to drive.
  • His speech was tortuous. It was not simple and straightforward, and so was complicated and difficult to understand.
