totter (verb) move unsteadily from side as if about to fall.

When something or somebody totters they move from side to side as if about to fall. When a person is ill or sick, they move unsteadily from side, and are likely to fall. A structure totters if it is very weak and is about to collapse. An organization or a system totters if it is about to stop working because of serious defects.

  • Having been in bed for quite a long time, he tottered as he tried to walk. Being weak, he moved unsteadily and appeared to be about to fall.
  • The heavily loaded old cart tottered as they pulled it along. It was swaying form side to side and appeared to collapse at any time.
