tout (verb) praise someone or something.

To tout somebody or something is to praise them very highly, to make people believe that they are really worthy or important. If you tout a movie or a movie star, you praise them highly in presence of others, so that they also believe that they are great.

  • The publisher is touting the book as the book of the year. He is praising it so much just to make people believe that it is great and in the hope they will buy them.
  • Thomson is being touted as the next leader of the party. Some people are praising his qualities, and abilities to persuade them to believe that he is really fit for the position.
