To transcribe is to write down in a different script what is written in another script. For example if a piece of writing in Sanskrit is written down in English script the Sanskrit text is transcribed in the English script. We transcribe the sounds and symbols if we write down the exact representations of the sounds and symbols.

  • Students had to transcribe phonetic symbols into the ordinary English alphabet. They had to write in English script the phonetic symbols.
  • They understood Hindi, but could not read Hindi. So the Hindi story was transcribed in English script. The words were all Hindi words, but they were written down in English by using English alphabet.
