translucent (adj) partly transparent.

A translucent object is semitransparent. It allows light to pass through but does not help us see what lies on the other side of it. Stained glass, that is, painted glass and ground glass, that is thick glass are translucent, because they allow light to pass through them, but does not let us the objects on the other side of it, unlike pain glass through which we can see what lies on the other side. Curtains of some varieties are translucent. They are semitransparent.

  • The stained glass forming part of the dome was translucent. It was semitransparent, not allowing a clear sight of the sky, but letting in subdued sunís rays.
  • The curtains were translucent. Through them we could see the shapes of the people on the other side, but not their features.
