tribute (noun) something said or given in admiration or respect of somebody; a clear sign of the good qualities someone has; payment of goods or money to one ruler by another.

When you say, give or do something in admiration of or to show your respect to a person, you pay tributes. To the person. You pay tributes to the soldiers who saved your country from foreign attacks if you say, give, or do something to show your respect and admiration for them. A tribute is a clear sign of the achievements or the abilities of a person. The plays of Shakespeare are a tribute to his genius. That is, they are a clear sign of his genius. In the past the money or goods one ruler paid to another for not attacking him or for protecting him.

  • They paid rich tributes to the leader for leading their party to victory in the elections. They all spoke in praise of his organizational skills and his campaign management, and presented him a number of expensive gifts.
  • The theory of relativity, which has made space flights possible, is a tribute to the genius of scientist Einstein. Without the theory space flights would not have been a reality.
