trite (adj) dull and boring because of frequent repetition.

A trite joke is not amusing because it has been repeated too often. So is a trite remark of little interest because you have heard it too often and there is nothing new about it. An idea is trite if it is not new, and so is not exciting.

  • People avoided him because of his trite jokes. He makes jokes that he has repeated too often already, and people are bored because of them.
  • Half those gathered to listen to him left in the middle of his speech, because they found it full of trite remarks and trite ideas. Neither his remarks nor his ideas had already been heard a number of times, and so the audiences felt bored.
