tumid (adj) swollen; (of a style of writing or speech) bombastic.

When a part of the body is tumid, it is swollen because of an injury. When there is a swelling in any part of your body, it is tumid. Your style of writing or speech is tumid, when you use high sounding words, and it appears bombastic.

  • Pressed between the two doors, his fingers were tumid. There was swelling of the fingers as they got pressed. Fortunately there was no bleeding.
  • The leaderís speeches and writings are tumid. They are pompous and full of high-sounding words that tire the listeners and readers.
