ultimatum (noun) final warning.

An ultimatum is the last warning to a person or a country, after which there will only be action. There will be no more warnings. If after an ultimatum, those who receive it do not respond, force will be used or action will be taken against them.

  • The government gave an ultimatum to the terrorists hiding in the mosque to surrender in twelve hours. This was its final warning, and if the terrorists did not surrender within the time, the government will resort to action against them.
  • The worker’s union served an ultimatum on the management that if their wages were not raised by the next month, they would go on strike. This was their final warning. They would strike work without further notice, if their demand was not conceded.
