veer (verb) change direction.

When a ship veers to the right or the left, it turns right or left. It changes its direction.

  • Sailing for some distance straight ahead, the ship veered to the right, as there were signs of a storm on the left. To avoid the storm blowing from the south, the ship changed its direction to the right.
  • As the truck veered to the right, a car coming from the opposite direction ran straight into it. The truck changing its direction to the right was so sudden that the car driver was taken by surprise.
