vehement (adj) (of feelings) strongly; forcefully expressed.

When you are vehement, you express your feelings very strongly, especially your feelings of anger and opposition to something. Vehement opposition is strong opposition. There was vehement opposition to the tax rise. This means that there was strong opposition to the tax rise.

  • In view of the vehement opposition to the chairman's proposal, the proposal was withdrawn in the last minute. The strong opposition forced the chairman to withdraw his proposal.
  • The opposition was vehement in its criticism of the government's low allocation of funds for higher education. The opposition parties strongly criticized the funds as totally insufficient.
