vent (noun) small opening; small opening in the body of fish and birds through which waste matter passes out.

A vent is a small opening through which air; gas or liquid passes out of/into a room, building or a container. The vent in a barrel lets the liquid in it to flow out. Anything can be poured into the barrel through the vent. A vent is also a small opening in the bodies of fish, birds, etc., through which their waste material passes out.

  • As the barrel fell on its side, the oil in it began to flow out through the open vent. The oil flowing out the open hole splashed all over the floor.
  • The vents in the wall near the roof allowed warm air to pass into the room. The vent in the wall had to be closed to keep the room cool.
