vernacular (noun) language people use, especially one that is not the official language.

Vernacular is the mother tongue or the language spoken by a group of people, though it might not be the official language. Teaching is best done in the vernacular, because that being the mother tongue, things taught in it are best understood. During the British days in India the medium of education was English, and not the vernacular, that is, the different languages spoken by the people of the different parts of India.

  • The Buddha preached his message in the vernacular, that is the language that the people he preached to understood very well, that being their mother tongue. This made it easy for the people to understand him well.
  • Galileo wrote his scientific findings in the vernacular of his time, to reach a larger number of readers, who understood it better than the official Latin language.
