A vestige is a small part of something that is still there after the other and more important parts have gone or disappeared. The vestiges of a bygone empire are what remains or some signs of the empire after the empire has disappeared. The vestiges of an ancient civilization are the traces or marks of the disappeared civilization. A small trace of something is also a vestige.

  • The English language is the last vestige of the British Empire in India. Though the British left India long, long ago, the English language and some aspects of English language are still found in India.
  • In Harappa, a place in India, we still find the vestiges of an ancient civilization. Some of the ornaments, pottery, coins, etc., of those days are still found there.
